33 Years of #Shiva (07/12/1990).
Ramgopal Varma's "Shiva" stands as a significant milestone in Indian cinema, mainly due to its pioneering approach in various aspects of filmmaking. One of the most notable contributions of "Shiva" was its innovative cinematography and sound design, which were quite ahead of their time in the Indian context. The film broke new ground with its realistic and unorthodox visual storytelling, coupled with groundbreaking camera work, setting a new benchmark in the industry. Additionally, "Shiva" was instrumental in introducing fresh talent, both in front of the camera and behind the scenes, aiding in the launch of several notable careers in Indian cinema.
Another key aspect where "Shiva" left its mark was in its portrayal of violence. Unlike the stylized and often exaggerated action scenes common in Indian films of that era, "Shiva" presented violence in a more realistic and gritty manner, influencing the way action sequences were handled in subsequent Indian movies. Alongside its technical prowess, the film was also acclaimed for its strong narrative and well-rounded character development. Moving away from the melodramatic norms of the time, it focused more on creating relatable characters and engaging storylines. This shift not only enriched the film's appeal but also had a lasting impact on the narrative styles of Indian cinema. In essence, "Shiva" is often regarded as a turning point in the Indian film industry, marking the beginning of a new era, especially in the action and crime genres, and has influenced a generation of filmmakers.

Sri Lanka urged not to violate fundamental rights in the name of combating terror
We the undersigned, who are from and live in the various nation-states of South Asia, express our deepest condolences to all those who have lost loved ones in the serial bomb blasts in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday. We express our solidarity with those working tirelessly to address the needs of the injured in the aftermath of this carnage and to sustain interfaith and community relationships. While we support all justice efforts that seek to hold the perpetrators of violence accountable, we also urge the Government of Sri Lanka to ensure that, in the name of combating terror and ensuring national security, fundamental human rights and dignity of all concerned are not violated.
We say this because in all our countries, investigations into terror and anti-terror legislation have been accompanied by consistent and continuing violation of civil and democratic rights. Furthermore, in the name of ensuring national security, successive governments in the region have sought to legitimise their various acts of impunity – directed against not only purported or possible suspects but entire sections of the civilian population. This has led to unaccountable loss of life and a steady erosion of democratic guarantees and institutions, including unaccounted for deaths and disappearances. We note with concern that media reports and remarks by state officials and political leaders in Sri Lanka have pointed to State inaction with respect to warnings by intelligence agencies about possible acts of terror. Such inaction and indifference, we regret to note, amounts to State complicity with the violence that subsequently unfolded. We are also concerned that the ‘owning up’ to these acts by the so-called ‘Islamic State’ (Daesh) might encourage Islamophobic attitudes and expressions, both on the part of the Sri Lankan Government and sections of civil society. Should this happen, Sri Lanka would be tragically drawn in to a familiar international discourse and practice to do with ‘Islamic terror’ with all the resultant tragedies, as we have witnessed across Asia. In a country that has barely recovered from decades of civil mistrust, war and violence, this cannot bode well for its sovereignty, civil peace and economic and social life. We wish to point out that the so-called war on ‘Islamic terror’ has resulted in large numbers of the Islamic faith being persecuted, both in their countries and across the world – and this sadly only enhances the appeal of those who seek to wage war in the name of Islam and what they perceive as Islamic concerns and interests. Thus is set in motion a cycle of violence that benefits no one but the arms trade and industries, and political powers that seek to establish their hegemony in the region at all costs. In this context: nWe support all struggles to ensure transparent and fair pursuit of justice for the victims of the blast. At the same time, we stand with those who are against undemocratic anti-terror laws in Sri Lanka, even if they are purportedly deployed for purposes of investigation and national security. nWe protest attempts to target or persecute those of the Islamic faith, in the name of countering terror, whether by the state or vigilante groups. nWe support Muslim communities in the region that have called for peace and are critical of voices from within that endorse extremist religious positions, which polarise everyday life and interactions, and vitiate meaningful dissent and dialogue. nWe affirm the resilience of diverse cultural and religious traditions in the region that have fostered longstanding habits of mutuality, trust and co-existence. We do not wish for the specificity of local beliefs and traditions, of all faiths, to be drawn into polarising global discourses of religious ‘unity’ and ‘singularity’ imposed from above. *We reject the findings of Pakistan's missing persons' commission. BNM*
2018-12-12
Dil Murad Baloch, the Information Secretary of Baloch National Movement criticized the inquiry commission report on missing persons. He said that Pakistani official and private institutions had trespassed all limits to make the case of missing persons controversial; the last days released statistics were an insult to the injuries of the families of the missing persons.
He said , “all institutions of Pakistan, including judiciary are equally responsible for the genocide of Baloch people; Baloch nation has no expectations on them; time and again Pakistan army and intelligence agencies in order to divert the attention of the world, create fabricated stories and provide statistics which are far from the reality.”
Dil Murad Baloch stated that on eve of the international day of human rights the inquiry committee said in the report that this year only 899 were enforced disappeared throughout Pakistan. He added, “And we categorically reject this findings of the commission. In fact the inquiry commission had been formed to hide the war crimes of Pakistan.”
While rejecting the report, the information secretary said, “ in reality, from January to October more than one thousand persons were enforced disappeared only from occupied Balochistan; all of the missing persons are enduring torture in the torture cells of Pakistan army and intelligence agencies,”
He said. “If the missing persons of Sindh and Pushtunkawa are added with the numbers of Baloch missing persons, the actual number of the missing persons would be greater several times than the statistics that are provided by the Justice Javid Iqbal commission.”
Dil Murad Baloch iterated that when the prime minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan himself had confessed, then there would not be any doubt that the number of Baloch missing persons was in thousands those had been languishing in the army’s torture cells. Since 2001, form the initial phase Musharraf regime, an unending series of enforced disappearance was initiated where thousands of Baloch went missing , including Asghar Ali Bangulzai. During Musharraf era, then federal interior minister, Aftab Ahmed Sherpao, had claimed the illegal detention of four thousand people, but no one among them was recovered. Similarly, during the tenure of Dr Malik and Sanaullah Zahri as chief ministers of Balochistan, that time interior secretary of province Akbar Hussain Durrani and interior minister Sarfaraz Bugti had claimed respectively that nine thousands and eleven thousand people were arrested during several military operations. Only this number is more than twenty-five thousand. The total is more than forty thousand.
Dil Murad Baloch said that Baloch National Movement for last five years had been printing the monthly reports of Pakistani atrocities and of Baloch genocide, which provide detail information of those who had been whisked away by Pakistan army and intelligence agencies.
The central Information Secretary of BNM Dil Murad Baloch said: “Pakistan has lost its dignity and trust in international community; now time has arrived that the responsible international organizations take the notice of humanitarian crisis in Balochistan and take due action against Pakistan.”
